In Sikh tradition, seva, selfless service, is central to faith. Decorating the darbar of Guru Granth Sahib Ji with fresh flowers is one beautiful form of that service. Families offer floral seva on Gurpurabs, for Anand Karaj weddings, at the bhog of an Akhand Path and on other special occasions. Doing it respectfully requires understanding a few customs and planning with the gurudwara.

This guide shares what we have learned at Krish Florist from working with families and gurudwara committees across Delhi.

Understanding floral seva

Floral seva is an offering of humility and gratitude, not a display. The focus is always on Guru Granth Sahib Ji, never on the decoration itself. That perspective shapes every decision: simple, clean designs are often more appropriate than elaborate ones, and flowers should never distract from the path or the sangat.

Always start with permission

Every gurudwara has its own maryada, schedule and committee. Before planning floral seva:

  • Speak to the gurudwara committee or granthi
  • Confirm the date and the time slot allotted for decoration
  • Ask about any restrictions on flowers, structures or placement
  • Check how and when the decoration will be removed

In large gurudwaras, many families may request seva on the same Gurpurab, so booking early is important.

Etiquette for decorators and families

Anyone working inside the gurudwara, including decorators, follows the same etiquette as the sangat:

  • Heads are covered at all times
  • Shoes are removed and hands washed before entering the darbar
  • Work is done quietly, without loud conversation or music
  • Tobacco and alcohol are strictly prohibited on the premises
  • Nothing is placed where it could obstruct the path or the sangat's view

Suitable flowers

Fresh flowers are always preferred over artificial ones for seva. Common choices include:

  • Marigolds: bright, durable and widely used
  • Roses: especially white, yellow and pink
  • Carnations: long lasting and available in many colours
  • Chrysanthemums: fresh and full
  • Tuberose and jasmine: for gentle fragrance

Many families prefer understated palettes such as white, yellow and saffron. Very strong fragrances are best avoided in enclosed darbars.

Where flowers are placed

The Palki Sahib is the focus of decoration: garlands around its frame, a floral canopy and arrangements along the darbar. The entrance and the path leading to the darbar may also be decorated. For Anand Karaj ceremonies, families often decorate the path around the Palki Sahib where the laavan take place.

The granthi or committee will guide exactly where flowers can go.

Anand Karaj planning

Anand Karaj ceremonies usually take place in the morning. Decoration is typically completed early, before the sangat arrives. Elegant, simple designs in white, pink or pastel shades are popular. Coordinate with the family and the gurudwara on timing, since the darbar may be in use for other services.

Home paths

Many families hold a Sukhmani Sahib path or Akhand Path at home. Floral seva at home focuses on the space where Guru Granth Sahib Ji is placed, with a clean, respectful arrangement and fresh garlands. The same etiquette applies.

After the seva

Decorations are removed respectfully once the occasion is complete, according to the gurudwara's guidance. Flowers are disposed of thoughtfully, often through composting.

Getting help

If you would like support with floral seva, our gurudwara flower decoration team works under the guidance of the committee and family. For festive decoration at home, see our puja flower decoration page, and for broader context on flowers in worship, read our article on flowers for religious ceremonies.

The spirit of seva

Above all, floral seva is about the intention behind it. Simple flowers offered with humility carry more meaning than any elaborate design.
