When you order flowers, you are usually asked to choose not just the flowers but the style: hand-tied bouquet, basket, box or vase arrangement. Each looks different, travels differently and suits different recipients. Choosing the right style can matter as much as choosing the right flowers.

Here is a simple guide to each arrangement style, from the florists at Krish Florist.

Hand-tied bouquet

What it is: Flowers gathered in a spiral, tied at the stem and wrapped in paper, cellophane or fabric.

Best for: Romantic gestures, birthdays, anniversaries and in-person moments. A hand-tied bouquet looks classic and photographs beautifully when held.

Practical note: The recipient needs a vase. If you are unsure whether they have one, consider another style.

Vase life: Similar to other styles once in water, typically five to seven days for most flowers.

Flower basket

What it is: Flowers arranged in a woven basket with floral foam or a water container inside.

Best for: Families, elders, housewarmings, festivals and get-well wishes. Baskets look generous and sit neatly on a table without any extra effort.

Practical note: Baskets are ready to display. Water the foam lightly every day to keep flowers fresh.

Vase life: Slightly shorter than flowers in a vase, since foam dries out faster.

Flower box

What it is: Flowers arranged tightly in a round or square box, often with a lid or ribbon.

Best for: Modern gifts, offices, anniversaries and romantic surprises. Boxes are compact, elegant and easy to carry.

Practical note: Boxes are ideal for small spaces and desks. They are also easier to deliver without damage.

Vase life: Depends on the setup. Boxes with water-soaked foam need light watering. Some premium boxes use preserved flowers that last much longer.

Vase arrangement

What it is: Flowers arranged directly in a glass or ceramic vase, ready to display.

Best for: Offices, hospitals (where allowed), hotels, formal gifts and recipients who may not have a vase. Orchid and lily arrangements look especially good in tall vases.

Practical note: The most convenient style for the recipient. They simply top up the water.

Vase life: Often the longest, because flowers sit in plenty of water from the start.

Which one should you choose?

  • Romantic moment, handed over in person: hand-tied bouquet
  • Family, elders or festivals: basket
  • Office desk or modern gift: box
  • Recipient without a vase, hospital or hotel: vase arrangement
  • Long-lasting gift: vase arrangement with orchids

Size considerations

A giant bouquet can overwhelm a small flat or a busy desk. Think about where the flowers will live. A medium box or vase arrangement often has more impact in a small space than a huge bouquet that has to be split into several containers.

Travel and delivery

Boxes and vase arrangements are the most stable during delivery. Hand-tied bouquets travel well when wrapped with a water source. Baskets are sturdy but can be bulky. For long journeys, such as deliveries to Gurgaon or Noida, boxes and vase arrangements are usually the safest choice.

Combining styles with gifts

Baskets can include chocolates or small gifts. Boxes pair well with a cake. For romantic surprises, a hand-tied bouquet with a card remains hard to beat.
