Orchids have a reputation for being fussy, but cut orchids are surprisingly easy to look after. A well-kept orchid bouquet can stay beautiful for ten days to two weeks, which is far longer than most cut flowers. The trick is not to do anything complicated. It is to do a few simple things consistently.
Here is exactly what we tell customers when an orchid bouquet leaves the Krish Florist studio.
Unwrap and trim on day one
When the bouquet arrives, remove the outer wrapping but keep any rubber band or tie that holds the stems together until you have a vase ready. Fill a clean vase with room-temperature water. Cold water is not necessary for orchids, and very cold water can shock tropical stems.
Using sharp scissors or a knife, trim about one centimetre off each stem at a slight angle. A clean cut opens the stem so it can drink properly. Crushed or blunt cuts do the opposite. If the stems came with small water tubes attached, remove them before trimming.
Water: less drama, more consistency
Orchids do not need a deep vase full of water. A few inches is enough, as long as every stem end sits comfortably below the waterline. What matters more is keeping that water clean.
- Change the water every two days, or daily in hot weather
- Rinse the vase each time to remove the slimy film that forms on the glass
- Re-trim the stems slightly every three or four days
- Use flower food if it came with the bouquet, but plain clean water works well too
In Delhi summers, bacteria grow fast in warm water. If the water looks cloudy, change it immediately, even if you changed it the day before.
Light and temperature
Keep your orchid bouquet in bright, indirect light. A spot near a window that does not get harsh afternoon sun is ideal. Direct sunlight fades the petals and heats the water. Avoid placing the vase right under an AC vent, beside a heater or on top of a television or refrigerator, since heat and dry air shorten vase life.
Fruit bowls are another hidden enemy. Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which makes many flowers age faster. Keep the vase away from bananas, apples and mangoes.
What to do as blooms fade
Orchid stems usually carry several flowers and a few unopened buds at the tip. The lower flowers open first and fade first. When a flower starts to look papery or droops, pinch it off gently. This keeps the stem looking neat and helps the plant put its energy into the remaining blooms. Many of the buds at the top will continue to open over the next week.
If a whole stem wilts early while the others look fine, remove it, re-trim the rest and change the water. One unhealthy stem can cloud the water for all of them.
Common mistakes
The most common mistakes we see are simple ones: leaving the bouquet in its wrapping for a day, forgetting to change the water, and placing the vase in direct sun. Another is misting orchid petals heavily. A light mist in very dry weather is fine, but water sitting on the petals can cause spots.
Orchids as gifts
Because they last so long and have almost no scent, orchids make excellent gifts for offices, hospital rooms and homes with people sensitive to fragrance. If you are planning to send one, our orchid bouquet delivery page shows current designs. For a comparison with other popular flowers, see our guide to flower arrangement styles, which explains when a vase arrangement is better than a hand-tied bouquet.

A quick daily routine
Once the first day is done, caring for an orchid bouquet takes less than two minutes a day. Check the water level, look for cloudy water, pinch off any faded flowers and turn the vase slightly so all sides get even light. That is it. With this routine, your orchids will keep looking fresh long after other flowers would have been thrown away.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an orchid bouquet last?
With clean water changed every two days and a cool, bright spot, an orchid bouquet usually lasts ten days to two weeks.
Should I use cold water for orchids?
Room-temperature water is best. Very cold water can shock tropical orchid stems.
Why are the buds at the top not opening?
Some top buds never open on cut stems, which is normal. Clean water and indirect light give the rest the best chance.
Can I mist cut orchids?
A light mist in very dry weather is fine, but avoid heavy misting because water sitting on petals can cause spots.
Where should I keep an orchid bouquet?
Keep it in bright, indirect light, away from direct sun, AC vents, heaters and fruit bowls.
